UNITED WORLD COLLEGES MALAYSIA SCHOLARSHIP 2012-2014

SUMMARY
Each year the UWC National Committee (NC) - Malaysia will receive from the UWC colleges a specific number of places (which may include a scholarship, bursary/partial scholarship or fee-paying place) for which they select students to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
Although strong academic achievement is valued highly at UWC, academic achievements are put into perspective with a demanding mix of community engagement, international affairs, physical activities and creative pursuits.
Our student intake is deliberately diverse and each of the schools and colleges draws together students from many different nations and backgrounds. Our bursaries, scholarships and fee structures aim to ensure a broad socio-economic mix within the student body that adds value to the student experience and the organisation.
UWC schools, colleges and programmes deliver a challenging and transformative education experience to a diverse cross section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future.
Please make sure you find out as much as possible about UWC before going ahead with your application. It is important that you understand the aims of the organisation and the commitment involved in the programmes that are offered. For more information please go to www.uwc.org.

ELIGIBILITY

The eligibility to apply via the Malaysian National Committee is as follows:

    1. Malaysian citizen.
    2. Resident in Malaysia and having completed Form 5 and sat for the SPM (or currently in the final year of ICGSE or equivalent) in Malaysia. A student who purports to be resident in another country straight after Form 5, without their family being with them would not qualify as IQ and the application would be carefully scrutinised.
    3. Between the ages of 16-19 years as of the 1st August in the year of entry to UWC.
    4. (Those on refugee status should contact the NC directly.)

The eligibility to apply as an IQ directly to a college:

    • Resident outside your country of nationality (this means you must be permanently based outside your home country, not on a short trip, short course or exchange programme).
    • Your country does not have an NC you can apply through.
    • You are on refugee status.

Applying to a college directly without recourse to your NC:

The only college that allows this at the moment (in terms of the 2 years International Baccalaureate Diploma) is UWCSEA.
ALL OTHER COLLEGES HAVE NOW BEEN INSTRUCTED TO CONFIRM AN IQ CANDIDATE'S ELIGIBILITY WITH THE RESPECTIVE NC.
In addition, UWC practices a one-form application system. If a candidate is unsuccessful in an application to an NC or college, they cannot then re-apply to a different NC or college, nor apply to more than one college/NC.

    ADDITIONAL NOTES

    • An application is made to UWC and not to a particular school or college (although you may be asked to state your preference).
    • Only one application can be made to UWC. You cannot apply through two different national committees.
    • Applicants with disabilities who are self-sufficient in their everyday needs are encouraged to apply.
    • Places are limited; hence the selection process is highly competitive. Applicants with at least 5 distinctions at SPM or 50% A/A* at ICGSE / equivalent with good co-curriculum records tend to apply. All selection processes include written applications and personal interviews. Other elements may include a piece of written work, group discussions and teamwork exercises.
    • The cost for a UWC education varies between the different colleges and is subject to the prevailing exchange rates. As an indication, the full fee paying cost for the two years at the most expensive college is approximately RM250,000 and the cheapest is approximately RM95,000. Places are usually offered on a partial scholarship basis. Unfortunately, full scholarships are only very occasionally offered.
